When parents enroll their children in swim lessons, the top priority is almost always safety. If you were to ask 100 parents why they want their child to learn to swim, nearly all would respond, “to be safe in the water.” While some children go on to pursue swimming as a sport, for most families, the main goal is ensuring their child knows how to stay safe in and around water. But how do we, as swimming instructors, make sure that not only are these essential skills learned, but that children actually want to come back week after week?
The answer lies in combining knowledge with water wisdom—and doing it all through a fun, play-based approach.
What Is Water Wisdom?
When we teach children to swim, we’re doing more than showing them how to float or kick. We’re giving them the skills (knowledge) to navigate water confidently, but we also want them to know how, when, and why to apply those skills in different situations. This is where water wisdom comes into play.
Water wisdom is the ability to make smart decisions in and around water. It’s what helps children understand when it’s safe to swim, how to recognise risks, and what to do in an emergency. Teaching children the mechanics of swimming is one thing, but water wisdom ensures they can act responsibly when they find themselves in real-world situations, whether at the pool, beach, or lake.
Teaching Knowledge Through Fun and Play
We all know children learn best when they’re having fun, so why not use this approach in swim lessons? A play-based learning environment keeps kids engaged and excited about swimming, making the lessons both educational and enjoyable. Games, activities, and challenges are not just fun—they’re an incredibly effective way to teach essential swimming skills.
Here’s how we teach through play:
- Games for Skill Development: Activities like treasure hunts or "shark tag" turn lessons into an adventure, while helping children practice vital skills like kicking, diving, and floating.
- Confidence Building: Using tools like the Orca Swim Trainer allows kids to gradually gain confidence, making the transition from assisted to independent swimming feel natural and less intimidating.
- Progress Through Fun: Play keeps the learning process exciting, encouraging kids to try new things, push their boundaries, and develop their skills, all without feeling like they’re in a rigid lesson.
Developing Water Wisdom Through Play
While children are mastering swimming techniques, they’re also learning to make smart, safe choices in the water. Play-based lessons allow us to teach decision-making and problem-solving in a way that feels natural and fun for the child. We set up playful scenarios where children practice real-life water safety skills.
For example:
- "Rescue Missions" and Safety Drills: These help kids practice reacting to emergencies in a low-pressure, fun environment. They learn to assess the situation, decide on the safest course of action, and gain confidence in their abilities. Using awareness week like "Water safety week" or "Drowning prevention week" are perfect to add loads of relative games.
- "Adventure Swims": Instructors guide children through different pool depths or simulate challenging water environments, helping them recognise their limits and make smart choices about when it’s safe to swim. Playing games like Simon says or directional work activities.
- Understanding Water Hazards: Games and guided play help children understand the difference between safe and unsafe conditions, such as currents, deep water, or swimming without supervision. Playing traffic light games or tag games with "safety zones" and "no go zones".
Through these activities, kids not only develop the knowledge of how to swim but also the wisdom to recognise when, where, and how to apply their skills to stay safe.
Why a Play-Based Approach Works Best
Children who enjoy their lessons are far more likely to return week after week, continuing to build their skills and confidence. When learning feels like play, kids stay motivated, enthusiastic, and engaged. This ongoing exposure helps them internalise key water safety principles while developing a lifelong love for swimming.
At the same time, they’re gaining both the technical knowledge of how to swim and the water wisdom to use those skills effectively. By combining fun and safety, we create a well-rounded learning experience that prepares children not just to swim but to swim SMART.
From Splash to Safety: A Lifelong Skillset
As swim instructors, we’re not just teaching strokes and kicks—we’re empowering children to make safe choices whenever they encounter water. By incorporating fun, interactive games into lessons, we’re able to teach these essential skills in a way that kids love, keeping them engaged for as long as possible.
The result? A child who can confidently swim, assess risks, and make wise decisions in the water—a child with both knowledge and water wisdom.
So, the next time your child plays a game of "shark tag" or hunts for underwater treasure in swim class, remember: they’re not just having fun—they’re learning to stay safe for life.
