Today, on World Drowning Prevention Day, we pause to remember lives lost and reflect on how we, as a global community of swimming educators, can do better.
Drowning is silent. It's swift. And it’s preventable.
According to the WHO, drowning claims over 230,000 lives each year. It remains one of the leading causes of death in children worldwide. These statistics aren’t just numbers—they represent heartbreak, families devastated, futures lost. And while it’s important to share these figures to raise awareness, we must move beyond shock into action.
I created Mini Water Adventurers and the SMART Swimmers approach because I couldn’t ignore the disconnect between traditional swim teaching and the real-world water wisdom children need. Too often, lessons focus narrowly on stroke perfection, pushing independence too early, or rushing through levels—without truly preparing our young swimmers for the unpredictable nature of water.
SMART stands for:
Self-Aware
Mastery of Movement
Anticipation Skills
Respect for Water
Trust in Their Abilities
These are the tools that protect. These are the life skills that matter. These are what I believe every child deserves.

Our mission of Water Wisdom means embedding water safety, awareness, and emotional readiness into every lesson, every week, every child. Not as a one-off safety talk, or just a badge at the end of a stage—but a continuous thread in everything we do.
💧 We use props, storytelling, and sensory exploration because play is training for the unexpected.
💧 We support children’s emotional journeys in the water, especially those with anxiety, fear, or high confidence that masks real risk.
💧 We educate parents, not just swimmers, because safety doesn't end when the lesson does.
💧 We advocate for tools like the Orca Swim Trainer to meet children where they are, not force independence prematurely.

Today is a reminder, but it’s not enough. We can’t afford for drowning prevention to be a one-day conversation. This should be the heartbeat of your swim school, your weekly planning, your parent emails, your poolside chats.
Let’s unite as teachers, coaches, and mentors—not just to teach swimming but to create a culture of Water Wisdom. Let’s not wait for another shocking statistic to spur change. Let’s lead it.
If you're a swim teacher reading this, I invite you to reflect:
🔹 Does every lesson you teach help your swimmers become more aware, prepared, and respectful around water?
🔹 Are you helping children understand risk—not fear it, but recognise it?
🔹 Are you working with families to ensure these lessons extend beyond the pool?
Together, we can make water a place of joy, confidence, and safety—not sorrow.

If this message resonates with you — if you’re a swim teacher who believes that water safety should be woven into every lesson, not just highlighted once a year — then you're not alone.
There’s a growing movement of teachers who are rethinking what swimming lessons can be. Teachers who are passionate about purposeful planning, emotional awareness, and raising truly Water Wise children.
If that sounds like you, come and connect with others who feel the same.Join us in the SWIM Squad — a community built for swim professionals who want to create lasting impact through thoughtful, progressive, play-led teaching.
Because together, we’re not just teaching swimming. We’re shaping a safer, wiser future — one swimmer at a time. 💧
